A new UK study led by the University of Leicester is investigating the effectiveness of the drug tocilizumab in treating long Covid symptoms. The trial, involving 152 patients at 15 sites across the UK, aims to determine whether the drug can reduce inflammation and improve symptoms such as fatigue, breathlessness, brain fog, and pain.
Clare Elliott, 33, who has experienced long Covid since contracting the virus in February 2020, is participating in the study. She hopes the treatment will help her regain some quality of life after years of debilitating symptoms.
Dr Rachael Evans, leading the research, highlighted that long Covid remains a complex and persistent condition affecting millions globally. The study follows previous research identifying specific proteins in the blood linked to long Covid symptoms, particularly in those who required hospital treatment.
Experts remain hopeful that ongoing studies will uncover effective treatments to improve the quality of life for long Covid sufferers.
