The UK government has announced plans to expand NHS community hubs and increase private sector involvement to reduce hospital waiting lists in England. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer outlined the initiative, aiming to cut the backlog by nearly half a million over the next year.

Currently, 7.5 million people are on NHS waiting lists, with over 3 million waiting longer than the 18-week target. The government’s plan includes:

Expanding community diagnostic centres and surgical hubs to increase treatment outside hospitals.
Giving patients more choice over where they receive treatment.
Partnering with private clinics for procedures such as joint operations and gynaecological treatments.
Sir Keir defended the use of private healthcare, stating patient care takes priority over ideology. The plan aims for 92% of patients to begin treatment or receive the all-clear within 18 weeks by the end of this Parliament—an NHS target unmet since 2015.

However, medical leaders raised concerns about workforce shortages and capacity constraints. The British Medical Association warned that without sufficient staff, achieving these targets would be difficult. The government has yet to outline the additional funding needed to support hospital expansions.
